Taking a break near Bank Newton

10.15 a.m. for 10.30 a.m start.

Gargrave revisited – in reverse!

Leeds - Liverpool Canal tow path and The Pennine Way.

5 miles; 21/2 hours.

Generally easy going with some gentle climbs and a few stiles.

The walk commences at the ‘Anchor Inn’ Hellifield Road, Gargrave, Skipton BD23 3NB., on the A65 approx half a mile North of Gargrave; there is a large car park.

To get there, from Bradford, heading towards Skipton on the A650 and A629, take the Skipton by-pass and then the A65 heading towards Settle. Go through Gargrave and the Anchor Inn is just over half a mile away on the left hand side; large car park just beyond the pub building.

Walk Location map

The walk takes us almost immediately onto the Leeds-Liverpool Canal tow path towards Gargrave and then to the Pennine Way (this part of the walk is across wide fields, some gentle climbs and a few stiles, but nothing too strenuous) towards Nuttleber Dyke; half way point and suitable for the mid walk refreshment stop.

We then return to the Anchor Inn via Newton Grange and Bank Newton along the tow path, passing several locks (down hill) along the way.

The pub offers a selection of beers with a good range of bar snacks and meals (2 for £10 usually on offer). Usual arrangement in selecting our meal(s) before setting off on the walk.
