A Summer Wine Saunter
A meander around the Upper Home Valley - with a difference.
Wednesday 30th September
10.00 for 10.15am
Meet: at "The White Horse" Scholes Road, Jackson Bridge, Holmfirth. HD9 1LY Location map
Take the A616 Sheffield Road, from Huddersfield, for 7miles (30 mins) before bearing right down the hill into Jackson Bridge. Turn right at the bottom for the pub. Parking is limited so please park neatly - and closely. Remember - double decker buses use all these narrow roads.
The Walk: About 4 1/2 miles. From Jackson Bridge it is uphill to Hepworth. We have the opportunity to take a break (after half a mile) at the 'Oil Can at the Carding Shed'. This is a Classic Car restorer with cars on display in the Oil Can cafe. The Carding Shed web site. Time is allowed for a look round with the opportunity to buy a coffee.
We continue through Hepworth, past the Butchers Arms, another Summer Wine scene, through gently rising fields to a 'Rest a While' spot, complete with See Saw and Tree House - for the young at heart! The next bit is across undulating countryside, through the deserted hamlet of Oxlea and back through Hepworth, to the valley bottom and then a short uphill bit around the Meal Hill estate before finishing with a view across the valley to the houses that Cleggie and Howard 'lived' in before we return to the White Horse for lunch.
The Pub: The White Horse is a small pub with decent food and a good selection of Cask Marque Real Ales. B & B is also available. White Horse web site. We will order lunch before starting our walk. As mentioned above, please park carefully.
